Counter Checking a Check in Chess
Checking in chess is a primary objective in the game, especially checking the enemy king. But at times counter checking is more important. Here are situations when counter checking in chess becomes a priority.
When the king is checked we can either make it run away or we block the check with another available piece. But the blocking can be 2-pronged; blocking the check and at the same time counter checking the checking piece.
For instance, the enemy queen checks our king and an ally rook is available nearby for a rescue blocking. We place the rook right next to the king as a cover and at the same time counter the checking enemy queen. This often makes the checking piece scamper away from the scene like a dog with tail between hind legs.
Another way of counter checking a checking piece is when minor pieces are concerned. When a knight checks our bishop and another ally knight supported by a pawn counters the enemy knight and at the same time supports our checked bishop, we have a good counter offense. Instead of our bishop running away for cover the enemy ends up fleeing for dear life.
But counter checking in chess can also be done as a completely separate move to divert attention from the first check against us. For instance, an enemy knight checks and traps our queen. We have no available piece for blocking the check and the queen has no way to run.
But fortunately we spot an opening to check the enemy king with our rook. And looking ahead, we also see that our bishop and a pawn can trap the enemy king and one follow-up check from the rook will end up in checkmate. So we ignore the check against the queen and proceed us we have seen.
A counter check from the enemy can be averted if we leave no room for it through a tight defense network of our pieces. We also prevent it by having two pieces check a single enemy piece. The extra check serves as a back-up in case the other check is blocked with a counter check.
When checking a rook with a bishop when a diagonal path to it is opened by moving out our knight so that it also checks it, and the enemy counter checks our bishop with a blocking piece, we can proceed to capture the rook with our knight.
Counter checking in chess is a good defense that can turn into a major offensive to trap the enemy to a checkmate.
