Gaining the Squares on the Chess Board's Center
A most coveted vantage point on the chess board is the center of the board. We may liken it to a strategic hill where we gain advantage over the enemy by being comfortably perched there and just shooting down at them. If we gain control of the center we gain control of the game.
Specifically we want 4 center squares on the board. Referring to their algebraic notations the coordinates of the center squares are D-4, D-5, E-4, and E-5. Included also are adjacent squares. The earlier we set up pieces on these squares the better. The earlier we gain control of the area the nearer we are at winning. The board center is crucial, to say the least.
From the center we can attack very quickly and conveniently to any side. We can easily maneuver pieces from the center to any point on the board. If we remain concentrated to a particular side it will be hard to quickly maneuver to the other side in case of emergencies. Furthermore, keeping to the edge makes us more vulnerable to traps and pinning. When we're in the middle there's wider maneuverability and therefore more escape routes.
Just consider: a queen can cover 8 directions when standing in the center of the board. When standing at the edge it can only go 5 ways. In a corner it is confined to 3 directions. All the rest of the pieces also have their full potential when placed on center squares and delimited when at the edge or in a corner. Thus, the potential of a piece is more pronounced when in the middle and weakened when at an edge or in a corner.
Strategies can easily be deployed from the center than from the sides. When attacking to the center we can easily maneuver if the enemy castles to the left or right. If the enemy wants to launch an attack against us, enemy pieces will find it difficult to get past our pieces positioned centrally. However, we should also place some pieces with the king and at the sides. Keep rooks, some pawns, and a knight or bishop guarding the sides and the king. The queen, a knight, and a bishop and pawns may be placed in the middle.
Gaining control of the center of the board as early in the game as possible is crucial. It's either we have the board's center or we have nothing.
