How to Checkmate with Two Bishops

When the game comes to a near-end and we're left with a king and 2 bishops while the opponent has nothing but a king, how do we accomplish a checkmate? At times like this we need to have an effective checkmate strategy.

Having two bishops is a favorable situation to be in. Two bishops can well act as effective delimiting boundary establishers confining the enemy to a corner faster. For a quick checkmate we need to trap the king as soon as possible and deprave it of escape routes. Two bishops are perfect.

A delimiting boundary is the use of horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines to shove the enemy king backward and progressively decrease its escape options. With bishops we use two diagonal boundaries with the black and the white squares. We either use two lateral diagonal lines together or intersecting lines.

The enemy king cannot step on the boundary lines because it will be under check. Thus, it has no other alternative but to keep stepping back until it is fixed to a corner. We should, however, beware not to have the situation result to a stalemate. Allow the enemy king 2 squares to move to and from while finding out a way to check it.

An ideal final positioning for a checkmate strategy would be the following: the enemy king stands on D-8, our king on F-8, one bishop on B-6 and another on F-5. Note that our king stands a mere square from the enemy king. This is a strategic position for our king. During checkmates like this the king plays a vital role and becomes technically powerful. The bishop on the white squares sets the delimiting boundary while the bishop on the black squares provides the check.

If we have only a king and one bishop a checkmate is impossible. In some games this would result to a tie or else the game would be weighed in terms of the value of the pieces remaining. Hence, it is important to at least be left with 2 bishops to enforce a checkmate with a king. Remember also that when the opponent has only a king the 12-move limit will start to be enforced and we should consummate the checkmate sooner.

In this checkmate strategy it is important to keep our king close to the enemy king. While the two bishops establish the boundary our king should go closer until it is a mere square away from the enemy king. This is a sure winning strategy.
