Useful Decoys as Chess Strategy
When we want to hatch up a deadly offensive in chess we often have to put up a show somewhere to cover for the plot. Then the execution becomes more effective. In other words, we set up a decoy strategy to divert attention.
There are many ways to contrive decoys in chess. The first and popular among them is sacrificing a piece. We do this to attain a much weightier and deadlier move in the game—like capturing the queen or checkmating the king. Another is by moving some pieces to a certain part of the board while the true attack is on the opposite side. The main thing is to deceive or bluff the enemy and keep the same busy on the wrong side of the board.
A powerful decoy is to make a seemingly weak formation at the start. Players often do very strongly at the start with the use of fortified formations. When we assume a posture of weakness at the start the enemy will be duped into attacking all-out. When we have all major enemy pieces out that's when we trap them with a blitzkrieg-like capturing strategy or a major hit against enemy camp where only the king and a few minor pieces are left quite vulnerable.
A decoy strategy is not without a strong defense and offense system or formation, however. Everything is planned in the mind and manifested on the board only later when the right time comes. What are readied are openings from which attacking pieces can swiftly emerge and conquer.
Mostly, decoy tactics move mere pawns initially but with a powerful pawn structure. Knights may be moved just outside the formation. When major enemy pieces have been moved out our main attack force, 2 to 3 pieces, quickly moves into enemy territory, shocking the opponent.
The opponent often withdraws the assault to cover for the enemy king. But usually, the reinforcement is too late and a checkmate has rendered any rescue attempt futile. A key to this strategy is to make sure the pawns give way to our assault pieces but not make too wide an opening to give way to enemy snipers checking from a distance. Two pawns in front and two pawns each side may be opened for this purpose. Then slightly position the knights and bishops.
A decoy strategy is very useful when capturing the king even while its officials are present on the board and fully operational. This destroys the enemy's confidence and assault plans.
